Gloria Tarigo: Let them Eat Cake!

The humble cupcake has gained new respect in the worlds of the culinary arts and wedding planning. Once relegated to children’s birthday parties, cupcakes have enjoyed something of a Renaissance.   Whether it is Sex and the City‘s reference to the NYC Magnolia Bakery or the mobile cupcake stands that dot the City, these mini-cakes boast a popularity never seen before.  Indeed they are even serving as the “wedding cake” for some innovative brides and grooms.  In several recent weddings of worldly, accomplished and innovative couples, a cupcake tower replaced the traditional wedding cakes–and the guests were not only amused, but enthusiastic about the choice.

In shining light on this reception option, I wanted to introduce folks to my friend (and baker  extraordinaire) Gloria Tarigo, owner of “Let them Eat Cake.”  Gloria, a former French teacher (who else would use Marie Antoinette’s famous line from the French Revolution, to name her business?) is a force of nature in the cupcake universe.  Her designs combine tasty cakes with colorful designs, for social occasions, holidays, business functions, and gifts.  Her cupcakes are perfect for engagement parties, bridal showers, or as the featured dessert at the wedding.  Not only does Gloria make a mean cupcake (along with other superb desserts and sweets), but she has a heart of gold.  I first came to know Gloria when we worked on a charity event for New Alternatives for Children, a wonderful nonprofit severing disabled kids and their families here in New York.  Gloria was a dedicated co chair and master baker for the event.

In a number of my private weddings for eloping couples, I like to provide cake and champagne for the “celebration” after the ceremony.  Gloria’s cupcakes are a perfect choice for such an occasion and would, no doubt, be a welcomed addition to any wedding celebration, as the main dessert or fun addition!  You can reach Gloria at 917.865.5352.
